One realises you’ve become a teacher!
I was never going to become a teacher!! Despite how many people said it at various stages of my life - I knew I wouldn't be in a classroom teaching children. There were far too many other things I wanted to have a future in. I had Options of being a librarian (my love of books and reading), an author (my love of books and writing), a designer (my love of books and illustrations), an accountant (my love of books of maths...I quickly found out this career is not really anything to do with maths!) But in the end it was teaching that got me. I reckon mainly because of what those books, throughout my early life, had taught me and I passionately wanted to pass on that teaching to others and share my love of books and I have had the enormous pleasure of doing just that :)
Now it's your turn - what options did you pursue when you were at those important crossroads of life? Did your job end up being the one you thought it would be ... or not? Have you managed to take a passion into your work life? Leave a comment below because I sure would like to know :)
I am a retired teacher. I found my niche with young children (ages 4-5) in the preschool environment. My Virtual Vineyard
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by, Val and so nice to meet another teacher - the younger ones are always amazing to be around, aren't they?
DeleteHi Senco - I'm told now I must be a teacher .. nothing could be further from the truth - sadly I am a later developer ... still love this developmental period now - so much to see, read about, find out about etc ... and all at my own pace via blogging - what could be better. I've had some interesting work times ... but now is the 'good learning life' - cheers Hilary

Your blog posts are always enthralling and beautifully written - they impart information effortlessly so you ARE a teacher now even if you maybe didn't know it, Hilary :)
DeleteI nearly became a teacher, but during my classroom practicum during my university years, I realized the public speaking aspect made me stressed out and exhausted. So I switched my major from English education to English writing and became an editor. I've done some graphic design in my editing career and for a time toyed with pursuing that. But my true love has always been words.

I think as long as we recognise what works and what doesn't for us and are brave enough to change our surroundings we can end up where we need to be :)
DeleteI have to say I never found a job niche that thrilled me as a business major. Probably should have pursued the arts. Oh well. I slog along and earn money, and have fun when not at work. I am glad your options filled your passions.
ReplyDeleteI would certainly have thought you were on the Arts side, Joanne but as you say you utilise your strengths and loves outside of your work regime :)
DeleteWhat? there were options?? Gosh, I'll have to rewind all the way back now and ask for something apart from 'couch potato' and 'procrastinator poet' :D
ReplyDeleteGreat choice for O and congrats on finding an option you're passionate about!

Ha Ha - I know it can feel that way, can't it :)
DeleteI'll be over to catch up soon!
I too am a retired teacher - and it was really the only thing I wanted to be. I did toy with becoming a librarian but I stayed a teacher for 30 + years. Still miss it. Now I am pursuing art and writing.
ReplyDeleteI miss the children NOT the useless amounts of paperwork or govt directives that are NOT about teaching!!
DeleteNice! Teachers are amazing. :) I've wanted to be an author ever since I was eight or so, and now at twenty-four I have three books published, and am continuing to write. =)

Wow - that is impressive to have followed your dream since age 8 :)
DeleteIn the early '70s, women became teachers, nurses, secretaries, etc. I loved children then and now, so I became a teacher.
ReplyDeleteI think this is one of the reasons I enjoy blogging so much is that I get to "meet" so many like-minded people, Susan - there is so much we have in common :)
DeleteWhen I became a widow nearly nineteen years ago there was an enormous void in my life, the children all flown the nest, I started to write poetry and go to concerts, the poetry , I have written four books and the concerts have take me to many places in the US.Spain and Ireland. all places I would not have visited.
ReplyDeleteLoved your "O" post.
Yvonne.
I think, Yvonne, that anyone who can cope with the terrible things that can occur in life is to be saluted. I am glad you found other options to help you ride out (and continue to ride out) the storm. Lovely to catch up again through the A-Z :)
