Mighty

Joining in with Sara's

MIGHTY

On an evening, in the dark
I am watching Mighty Mouse
In the school hall on rickety school chairs
An old projector clicks away
And I am spellbound
I am the smallest in my class
… """Mouse"""...
Heads turn towards me
Smiles, some sniggers
My fellow students, five and six years old
I watch as the smallest becomes the greatest
Mighty Mouse shows me what I could be
By the end I leave knowing
Size isn’t everything
By the next morning,
                                                                     I have grown mighty...
                                                                                                         mighty....              ...mighty.
                                                                                                                       ... mighty

Let me know your thoughts, do you remember Mighty Mouse?  Did you have film night at your school?  What's the first film you remember seeing on the "big screen"?  You know I'd love to know :)

  1. I can relate to this; I was the smallest in my class too. I especially like the way you ended this with a mouse head. :-)

I vividly remember watching The Secret Garden on an old reel projector at school. We'd watch a film in the run up to Christmas and the whole school would sit in the hall for it (younger ones on the floor, middle ones on benches, older ones on chairs). The Secret Garden stuck with me because I'd read the book so it felt like magic watching it coming to life on the screen and I knew exactly what was going to happen, unlike my friends.

    1. Well I would never have guessed you were once the smallest too and yes Christmas time at senior school we always had a film in the school hall all together but I think it was only this one time whilst I was at infant school and it was after school so that made it even more exciting - going back after dark!

  3. I can remember Mighty Mouse although I don't think I watched it all that much because I don't remember the theme tune or anything. But I do think that it's fab that a little cartoon inspired you to feel big and mighty :) #theprompt

    1. Inspiration can truly come from anywhere, can't it? I think that's why its important for children to see role models (who they can relate to) overcoming some of the problems they may have.

    1. Cartoons are one of those things that often traverse nations' boundaries - its wonderful that although we might be 1000s of miles apart we can still have seen the same thing as children :)

  5. I didn't know about Prompt Linky. Interesting.
The first movie I remember seeing in a theater is "The Jungle Book" in the old Fox Theater in Joplin, Missouri. We did not have film night in my school, but in college we had the classic film series via the English Department.

    1. The Prompt might be something your students want to join in with? The Jungle Book is such a favourite in my family - those songs :)

  6. I loved Mighty Mouse :) I was also very small, although myself and another girl competed (!) for smallest all through Primary! I love how watching it inspired you. I have a distinct memory of watching a space shuttle launch in the school hall... But that's the only TV memory I have from Primary :) Thanks so much for sharing with #ThePrompt and apologies for taking a couple of days to make it over to read!

    1. PS. Are you on Twitter? I share your posts, but I haven't managed to find a twitter handle for you to tag you (if we're following each other already, I apologise for being completely rubbish!!).

    2. No, I don't tweet - so that's why you can't find me :)

    3. Yes - you've just reminded me we sometimes got to see television programs in the school hall too - I used to love the one where the camera seemed to shoot out into space looking backwards at the earth past all the planets in the universe and out into the Milky Way.

  7. I miss the sound of the projector. I loved movie time in school. I think that's the only reason we behaved- to get to see a movie every now and then.

I loved Mighty Mouse too, though every now and then, I wanted to kick Polly Pureheart.

    1. Ha ha - I am beginning to see how you might be slightly naughtier than I imagined, Elizabeth - not behaving at school - really?
