E is for Excuses, Excuses!

Welcome to my posts for the A to Z Challenge 2016.
This year, I am posting
Special School Stories
tales from either my time as a teacher or teaching assistant within classrooms in the U.K. or from my own school days growing up around the country

It really did, it really did, it really did, Miss
Happened that way, happened this,
It really weren't my fault, Miss
It was his!

The dog ate my homework, my mum forgot my lunch
I lent my PE kit to my brother - yeah thanks a bunch
My sister let out the class gerbil when we had him at our house
And gran sucked him up the hoover - she thought he was a mouse
But none of it's my fault, I'm not the one to blame
The teacher thinks, "Excuses, excuses - they start to sound the same!"

So come on you can tell me, what excuses did you come up with to tell your teacher why it wasn't your fault or if you're a teacher or parent what are some of the strangest excuses you've heard from a child?

  1. Great poem. I'm from a generation taught not to make excuses. I didn't do work late in school. I have, however, made some excuses as a teacher! But I try to be honest and own my choices. I'm not sure which excuses are the most unusual, but I do often hear about aunts having babies as a reason for a kid not doing the homework! Glenda from

  2. I'm sure you have heard them all. School was so long ago, I don't remember, but I'm sure I made one or two.
Now I make excuses for not attending a function that I would like to avoid. It could be a headache, car trouble, or "Sorry I have other plans."

  3. I had to explain to one of my kids teacher that the dog really did eat her homework.

    1. The one time the dog got my homework, I brought in the shredded remains as proof. The teacher wasn't happy--but at least she knew I wasn't lying!

  4. Now I try to just say "Sorry, that doesn't work for me" instead of making excuses...

  5. Fun poem. I don't remember any excuses to teachers, but I do remember to my chagrin, an unfinished project after college. Maui Jungalow

  6. Cute poem. I don't remember using any excuses when I was a kid. If my mom couldn't get one of us to admit we did something then she paddled all 5 of us. My grands usually use the "I forgot" excuse

  8. Reminds me of the time my puppy chewed up a college paper. I knew my teacher wasnt going to listen so I had to turn it in late.

  9. I liked school too much to come up with excuses. I'm sure some kids are darn creative - they get points for that - working harder to avoid than to do the work
