Canals - My Favourite Summer Vacation Spot Blog Hop

Lexa Cain in the run up to summer holidays is hosting a blog hop of favourite spots where people like to take their vacations.

My favourite place has become (over these past few years) anywhere on the British canal network.

Whether you are in the heart of huge city

or in the middle of a historical feat of engineering

or high above

or far below

Just being on the canal is so relaxing :)
You get peace and quiet and see the country you live in - in a totally new way.  Your pace of life slows down and you become much more in tune with nature.  You meet plenty of friendly people from all around the world but also have loads of time just to enjoy being alone together as a family.
I also like it because I get time to sit and read and I also get to see a whole lot of wildlife which I love :)

Now I'm off to explore others' favourite places to holiday so if you'd like to join in please click on the button below.

And tell me where is your best place?  Where did you go as a child?  What was your most fun experience whilst on holiday?  I'd love to know :)

  1. Lovely pictures. The canals look like a person could relax, and dream, and just enjoy this beautiful world. I love wildlife too and take bunches of pictures of the birds, deer, rabbits and whatever else crosses my path.

    1. I think you'd love it down on the canal especially if you like taking photos as there are so many creatures that because of the quiet venture so close to a boat which they just wouldn't do for any other type of vehicle!

    1. We did have one of our most memorable holidays in the Magic Kingdom so I know what you mean, Katie :)

  3. I've watched the boats on the canal and it's so peaceful to hear this gentle chugging - and we also got to stay on a barge near Canary Wharf - a friend used or maybe still does, live on one.
Because we travel a lot for work we tend not to take holidays - or else they're busman's holidays - like France the past two years. But right now with this cold weather I've been dreaming of a fortnight in a warm sunny place, with a pile of books by my side and a chance to take my brain out for a while. Greece sounds good :) But sometime in my life I'd love to do a canal trip - those photos look so enticing. Enjoy your summer holidays :)

    1. Thanks, Fil and I can certainly see the two of you on a canal boat holiday although I think you'd just be composing new songs all the time as the inspiration just kept hitting you!

  4. Where's the really tall canal bridge? I have a feeling I drove past it on one of my adventures but didn't stop to get a photo or explore because I was in one of 'those' mooods. I remember going to Birmingham and my cousin telling me that there were more canals there than in Venice.

    1. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and it truly is an amazing trip across - but not good if you don't have a head for heights as you really do look down over the side of your boat and the side of the canal and down, down, down a long way! Certainly there are a LOT of canals around Birmingham and I have been on quite a few of them :)

  5. That looks like a perfect summer vacation. I can feel myself gliding silently along those waterways with a book and nothing else to think about but the next beautiful sight or the next chapter. Ahhhhh.

  6. I definitely would enjoy the peaceful relaxing ride and the wildlife views, but I think I would get a little tense in the elevated canal. I'll have to pass on that one. lol What a nice vacation spent from the comfort of my chair! Have a glorious week, my friend! :D

    1. Thank you, Kim - there are just so many photos you can take on a canal even with a bad camera and not being good at photography you can still get a lovely shot of something :)
