Kids’ Kingdom on the tarmac playground

I thought this might be one of my trickier letters in the A-Z but it turned out fine and brought back a whole load of memories of playtimes both of myself as a young child and for my times surveying the school yard as a teacher.  It's not so much an asphalt jungle as a Kids' Kingdom in my mind. What are the playground games you recall?  Any serious mishaps occur on that hard tarmac?

  1. I can clearly remember when they painted new designs on our playground at junior school. One of them was a maze design which quickly got co-opted by a gaggle of girls as a house. Different bits of the maze were different rooms.

I love how imaginative we were to be able to transform these painted lines into something the designers probably never imagined. :-)

  2. All those K's are games? They sound like fun but not the games we played.

  3. So many amazing kiddie games come to mind! My favourite was hopscotch, marking the area with chalk was half the fun and we would fight over it!!! :)

  4. I remember, growing up on the streets of the Bronx - potsy (our name for hopscotch), handball, curbball, stickball, Double Dutch (jumprope with two ropes). The Unknown Journey Ahead agingonthespectrum.blogspot.com

  5. We had handball courts at my elementary school...I loved playing handball with those super bouncy blue rubber balls!

  6. Oh yeah. We had a merry go round. Tumble off it and many a skinned knee.

  7. Inside on rainy days it was four-square. Outside it was jump rope and the monkey bars.

  8. Hi SENCO - I had mishaps at home - learning to ride a bicycle on the gravel ... but at school lots of grass - I was lucky ... but great remembrances you've given us ... cheers Hilary

  10. I'm not familiar with any of those games. Tether ball was popular at my school, at least among the girls. And jump rope, and tag. As for mishaps, seems like someone fell off the bars on a regular basis. ;)
